Jobs in the fitness industry deal support people’s health and wellness in addition to their personal fitness. Pushing people out of their comfort zone to achieve big goals can be a life changing event. Experiencing cardiac arrest or a heart attack can also be a life changing and sometimes life altering event. Knowing what to do in an emergency situation can help save a life. This is why having CPR training is a necessity for anyone with jobs in fitness or health. Here are five reasons that fitness professionals need to know CPR:

    1. It saves lives. Cardiac arrest or heart attacks can happen to anyone or at any time. Periods of high physical stress can sometimes trigger these types of events. Your client relies on you to keep them safe at the gym. Monitoring your client’s heart rate, breathing, and body can help you determine if they need emergency help.

    2. Knowing CPR can help double a person’s survival rate when done correctly. CPR is performed when the heart stops beating and your person stops breathing. CPR, when administered correctly, keeps the blood pumping through the body keeping vital organs alive until emergency help arrives.

    3. CPR training can help you spot someone in trouble before they are in trouble. If you’re at the gym and see a man in the free weights area slumped over a bar, a bystander with no training might think they are simply taking a break between reps. With CPR training, you would be able to see that something is not quite right and can take action during those most crucial early minutes to respond.

    4. CPR can help your job and career. Jobs in fitness industry require CPR training in addition to their instructor certifications. If you are planning a career in fitness, already having your CPR certification can help you get the job you want.

    5. Clients will feel more comfortable knowing that you have Basic Life Support (BLS) lifesaving skills to help them if a situation should arise. This is especially important for any fitness instructor who wants to work with senior citizens or at risk individuals, even though cardiac emergencies can happen to anyone. There is different CPR training for children and infants than there is for adults. Knowing what to do and how to do it correctly promotes a healthy environment and can help save lives.
