ASFA Certification Basics

How does an ASFA certification work?

Choose the exam that fits your goals. Study with your own resources or use the optional books listed on the exam page. Take the exam online when you are ready. After you pass, choose an annual or lifetime certificate and complete payment.

Is ASFA accredited?

Yes. ASFA is fully accredited by the International Council for Online Educational Standards (ICOES).

How long has ASFA served fitness professionals?

ASFA was founded in 2007. It has issued more than 100,000 certificates in the United States and other countries.

Which certification should I choose?

Choose one that matches your current role and next career goal:

• Start with a foundational option for core knowledge.
• Choose a specialty option for a certain skill or client group.
• Consider an advanced or master-level option if you have more experience.

Exams and Study Materials

Do I need to complete a course before the exam?

No. ASFA uses online exams. There are no required classes or scheduled sessions.

Are books or study materials included?

No. Many exam pages list optional books or manuals. These resources are sold separately. You may also prepare with your current knowledge and other resources.

What score do I need to pass?

You need a score of 70% or higher.

How does Pay Only If You Pass work?

You can take the exam at no charge. You pay only after you pass and choose to receive the certificate.

What happens if I do not pass?

You are not charged. Review the material and try again when you are ready.

Certificates and Verification

When will I receive my certificate?

Your digital certificate is usually emailed within minutes after payment. It arrives as a PDF at the email address used for the order.

What if the certificate email does not arrive?

Check your spam, junk, and promotions folders. Make sure you are checking the email used at checkout. You can also use the Certification Download Area with your original email address and order number.

Does ASFA mail printed certificates?

No. ASFA sends certificates by email.

Can I download my certificate or pocket card again?

Yes. Use the Certification Download Area for active certificates and included pocket cards. Expired certificates cannot be issued again.

Whose name appears on the certificate?

We use the name entered in the shipping-address fields at checkout. If you buy for someone else, enter that person's name and check the spelling before payment.

What if the name on my certificate is wrong?

Email Customer Support. Include the full name, order number, checkout email, and correct certificate name.

How can someone verify my ASFA certificate?

Each certificate has a Control Identification number, also called a CI number. Email Customer Support with the holder's full name and CI number.

Using Your Certification

Where do ASFA-certified professionals work?

They work in gyms, studios, private training businesses, wellness programs, schools, and government settings. They work in the United States and abroad.

Will every employer or facility accept an ASFA certification?

No credential is accepted everywhere. Employers, gyms, insurers, and governing groups set their own rules. Check those rules before buying for a certain job or facility.

Does an ASFA certification replace a license or degree?

No. It does not replace any license, degree, training, or other credential required by law or an organization.

Can I apply for professional liability insurance?

ASFA works with insurance providers for fitness professionals. Each provider sets its own eligibility, price, and coverage. See the current options on the Fitness Professional Insurance page.

Annual and Lifetime Options

What is the difference between annual and lifetime certification?

An annual certificate is active for one year. You must retake the exam and buy it again before it expires. A lifetime certificate does not require yearly retesting or payment. Its education and activity rules still apply.

What must I do to maintain a lifetime certification?

Stay active in the certified field. Complete one related class, course, or seminar each year. You must also follow ASFA's current Terms and Conditions.

Can I upgrade an annual certification to lifetime?

Yes, within seven days of the original purchase. Email Customer Support or visit the Renewal Options page.

Orders and Customer Support

Can I get a refund after buying a certification?

No. Purchases are not refundable because the digital certificate is sent after checkout. Check the option, term, and recipient name before paying.

What if my payment will not process?

Make sure the billing details match your payment method, then try again. If it still fails, email Customer Support with your name, email, and a short description. Never email your full card number.
