As a fitness professional, you care for people and help them reach their health and wellness goals. But sometimes, as you try to do that, you may neglect yourself. In this post, we'll explore seven common mistakes fitness pros make when pursuing their career—and how they can be avoided.
Taking on too much.
The first mistake is taking on too much.
If you try to do everything at once, it will be impossible for you to be productive and efficient. You'll get nothing done because there's just too much going on in your head at any given time. You need space between tasks so they can be completed successfully and easily (and without stress).
The second mistake is not setting aside dedicated time for each task or project that needs attention, which leads to our third point: not prioritizing your tasks by importance or urgency (or both).
Trying to do it all.
As fitness professionals, it's easy for us to get caught up in the idea that we must do it all and perfectly. But this mindset can lead down a slippery slope of mistakes that will ultimately hurt your business--and your life!
The truth is that you can't do everything by yourself. You also don't need to try doing everything at once either; focus on one thing at a time (or two if they're related). If you try doing too much at once or trying too hard at something new before mastering the basics of your current job description, then chances are good that things won't go well for either party involved: either yourself or the client/company/organization depending on what kind of work situation comes up next time around!
Not asking for help.
One of the biggest mistakes people make in their fitness careers is not asking for help when needed. If you're struggling with something, don't feel bad about reaching out to someone who has more experience than you do. It's not a sign of weakness; it's a sign of strength!
Many of today's top trainers started by working with someone else before striking out on their own, including me! I learned so much from my mentor about running a profitable business and building an online presence that allows me to live my dream lifestyle: traveling around the world while helping others achieve theirs!
Being afraid to make mistakes and learn from them.
If you're afraid of making mistakes, you won't be able to learn from them. Your fitness career will only improve if you ask for help when needed and expect less from yourself. Consider these tips:
- Be bold and ask for help when needed--you're not the only one who has made a mistake or two! Plenty of resources are available online and through apps that can help guide your decisions in the right direction.
- Don't give up just because something didn't work out exactly as planned--make adjustments where necessary and try again! It's all part of life's learning process!
Not being honest about what you want and why you want it.
The first step in making a career in fitness is knowing what you want and why you want it. You'll have to be honest with yourself about your motivations because if they're not clear and pure, then there's no way your career will last.
- Be aware of your motivation
- Don't be afraid of what you want
- Be honest with yourself about what motivates you and why it motivates you--and don't let anyone tell you otherwise! You might think that getting paid lots of money or having lots of fame would make someone happy, but that isn't always the case. If someone has 10 million dollars but still feels sad because they don't have any friends or family around them who love them unconditionally...then does having money matter? When people get greedy (especially if this greed comes from insecurity), their lives begin falling apart around them: They lose relationships; they start cheating on their partners/spouses; they become more unhappy than ever before...it's just not worth it! The same thing happens when people try too hard at something which isn't fulfilling them inside either--for example, I've seen many dancers become sick because they were working hard towards becoming famous ballerinas instead of enjoying dancing itself (which is supposed to bring joy).
Being too hard on yourself.
Being too hard on yourself is a common mistake that many people make. When you're trying to achieve your goals, it's important to remember that you are not a failure if you don't meet them.
This can be difficult because our culture often tells us that failure is bad and success is good. But this is only sometimes true! Sometimes, failure leads us down new paths toward success by helping us learn what doesn't work so we can find out what does work.
I use self-compassion techniques when I'm feeling discouraged or down about my fitness progress or nutrition choices (which happens more often than I'd like). These techniques include:
- Writing down three positive things about yourself every day;
- Practicing gratitude exercises such as writing down five things, you're grateful for or making an "appreciation jar." This jar contains slips of paper with the names of people who have been kind to me recently;
- Listening to uplifting music while exercising;
Conclusion
Remember, it's okay to make mistakes. You could be better, and that's fine! Learning from them is important so you can avoid making the same mistake twice.
