3 Ways to Improve Your Triathlon Training

Triathlon training can be challenging sometimes due to the fact that you are mastering three separate sports: swimming, biking, and running. Your personal trainer training and education can make all of the difference when you are seeking out to improve your training and level of competition. Having a sport specific coach, preferably one who has completed a triathlon, can help give you an extra edge in your training and at your big competition. Here are a few ways to improve your triathlon training:

1. Get tips for brain power. Getting tips for increasing brain power will be one of your most valuable weapons in training and competition. Knowing how to push through mental blocks when you come to a difficult place – either physically or emotionally – will keep you going strong. When many athletes accept a Did Not Finish (DNF) as their final placement time, it is often due to the fact that they simply gave up when it got too hard.  It will always be hard – you are competing in a triathlon!  If it was easy, everyone would do it. You didn’t train for six months to quit during competition so get your head back in the game with the mental strength you learned in training.  

2. Be consistent with your training. Many athletes will seek out the top online fitness trainer or elite level local triathlon coach to help them design a plan to help them improve their athletic performance. A fitness plan is only good if you execute it the way it was written. If you are not consistent with your training, you will not see the results you want. Similarly to only dieting a few days a week, you won’t reach your goal weight. If you are unable to stick with your training plan, let your coach or personal trainer know so that adjustments and modifications can be made to accommodate the time and resources you do have. Trying to compete with inadequate training could greatly increase your risk of sports injury and could potentially take you out of your sport for the remainder of the year.  Compete smarter with consistency in your training.  

3. Clean up your diet. The elite level athletes recognize the potential of solid training combined with a clean diet. You could train hard for hours every day, but if you eat junk food and processed food often, your body is not receiving the nutrients it needs to train at that level and your risk of sports injury goes up as well as your risk for adrenal fatigue and hormonal imbalances. Personal trainers will often say, “You can’t outrun a bad diet,” and there is truth to that. Our daily diets provide the fuel that our bodies need and having a clean diet can help fight cellular inflammation, improve recovery times, and support muscular growth and proper organ function. Talk to a dietician or sports nutritionist if you want to make dietary changes for optimal sports performance.
