Setting Healthy and Realistic Goals

Many individuals will be seeking a gym fitness program to get in shape after the holidays. Reading health and fitness articles motivate and inspire people to jump into a fitness training plan. Setting healthy and realistic goals can help you stay on track and create a path to success along your personal fitness journey.

Goal setting training is important for anyone who wants to make a change to their lifestyle or take their training to the next level. Having goals adds purpose to your workouts. It gives you an end result that you are working toward and striving to achieve. If you go to the gym and do not make a fitness goal, you may not be doing the correct exercises or using proper form to see the results that you want to see. If you are not sure where to start, ask yourself, “What do I want to achieve from starting a new fitness plan?” It could be to lose weight, to gain fitness, to have more energy, to build functional fitness and reduce injury, to build strength and tone up, or just to have better overall health. Understanding what you want to get out of your fitness plan can help you set goals. A good personal trainer can also help you identify goals by providing you with a personal fitness assessment to see where you need to focus the most.

Setting realistic goals can help you stay on track and prevent burnout. If your goal is to lose weight and tone up, understand the work and be realistic about what you will have to put in to achieve that goal. It might be an adjustment to your fitness plan, it might be an adjustment to your personal nutrition, it might be a combination of both depending on your current daily habits and what your personal daily dietary needs are. If you sign up with a group fitness trainer and don’t reach your goal in 30 days, your goal may not have been healthy or realistic. Break that goal into smaller and more achievable goals. For example, make a goal to attend three group fitness classes during your first week of your new training plan. Making smaller and more achievable goals that support your larger goal helps you build a path to success, while celebrating the smaller milestones of achievement.

Setting healthy and realistic goals can lead to an overall healthier lifestyle. Individuals who are good with setting goals and working toward them are better focused during their training. They are better able to resist temptations because they are working toward a specific goal. For example, if your goal is to lose weight, you would be able to resist a sweet treat better than someone who has not identified losing weight and improved nutrition as a goal. You would be able to say to yourself that having that treat does not move you closer to your personal goal. Setting goals and working toward them builds momentum along your fitness journey.
