How to Start a Healthy Weight Loss Plan

People of all ages and activity levels want to lose weight at some point in their life. Having a healthy weight loss plan is the key to keeping it off and maintaining that healthy weight without having to constantly diet.

One of the first steps to beginning a healthy weight loss plan is to set a realistic goal. A realistic goal is not a weight that you dream to be someday. It needs to be a reasonable goal that sets you up for success. Give yourself many small goals if you have a lot of weight to lose so that you can celebrate the smaller milestones on your journey to weight loss. If you plan to lose more than twenty pounds, be sure to visit with your doctor first to make sure that you do not jeopardize your health during your plan.

As you celebrate your milestones, switch your mindset on healthier ways to reward yourself. Treat yourself to a sports massage or manicure. Reward yourself with a new workout outfit or a club membership. Do not reward yourself with food. You have worked so hard to reach your milestones. Do not sabotage your own success with negative habits you have struggled to give up.

Share your weight loss goals with friends and family. They can help provide encouragement along your journey. Invite a friend for a walk or workout class. Invite your friends who love to cook to come and help you with meal prepping and healthy cooking. Host a meal prep party and everyone can benefit by saving time later in the week not having to prepare meals. Find yourself an accountability partner. This can be someone you can call when you don’t feel like working out or you feel like you are transgressing into old habits. Individuals who share their goals with others are more likely to reach their goal and be successful.

If you are struggling with what to eat, seek out a nutritionist that can help you. This can be very resourceful if you have a lot of food allergies and are unsure what is okay to eat or how to prepare something. Keep a journal and log all of your meals. Studies have shown that people who keep a food journal tend to make healthier choices because they are thinking about what they are eating and what they have to write down, as opposed to mindless eating in front of the television. A food journal can also be beneficial to a dietician so they can see your eating patterns and habits and make adjustments from there.

Remember that food is not bad. Food is fuel. Food sustains life and gives you the energy you need to enjoy life. Keep a positive attitude and focus on the benefits that you will enjoy along your journey. Healthy lifestyles take time.
