5 Tips to Improve Your Personal Training

The benefits of personal training allow you to inspire, motivate, and help be the driving force behind positive lifestyle changes for individuals. You get to play the roles of not only a health coach or personal gym instructor, but you also get the opportunity to be someone’s inspiration as they go on a personal journey to improve their health and fitness. The following tips can help you improve your personal training:

  1. Understand what your client expects from you. Some individuals are seeking a complete overhaul of their fitness routine and need a lot of hands on training to be shown what to do and how to do it safely. Others are simply looking to tweak a few moves to receive better results from what they are already doing. And some clients just want the accountability partner and someone to tell them they are doing great. Understanding what your client expects from you can help keep yourself in check to make sure you are not pushing a client too hard or creating goals that are too stressful to work towards.
  2. Stay up to date on fitness fads and trendy workouts. Clients will be curious and seek out information from you about something a friend is doing at another health club. Be ready to help educate them make the right decision for themselves. Also continue to research and stay on top of your training. A knowledgeable trainer will be the trainer that clients and professionals seek out the most. PT training classes online can help with continuing education. Having knowledge will be able to help you work with your clients to prevent the yoyo fitness fads.
  3. Set realistic goals for your clients. If your clients want huge changes, help them turn those big goals into smaller steps with smaller goals along the way so they will continue to feel encouraged and successful during their health and fitness journey. It’s hard to see the big picture times and goals that are too big are often not met as the client loses hope of obtaining those larger goals. Smaller goals will help them see that those little celebrations are actually very big steps on their way to the bigger goals.
  4. Set a realistic time from for meeting goals. For example, If you have a client that wants to train for a marathon who is new to running, they will need a minimum of 6 months to get their safely. In this example, if you have a new runner whose goal is the marathon distance, have them select a marathon in that time frame so they will have a realistic goal to work towards. Having them try to train or compete in a timeframe any shorter than that can lead to burnout and injury.
  5. Make it fun! Clients who have certified personal trainers that make it fun will make fitness a way of life, not just something you do a few hours a week.
